ASSISTANT VETERINARY TECHNICIAN

Job Summary

Provide medical care for chimpanzees. Most duties performed under direct supervision.

Duties and Responsibilities

Working with a team, the assistant veterinary technician will be responsible for ordering and stocking veterinary supplies; maintaining the cleanliness of the vet clinics; maintaining med trays and medical log books; preparing med bottles for AM and PM distributions; autoclaving surgical instruments, preparing for surgery; maintaining medical equipment; and coordinating laboratory tests and shipment.  The assistant veterinary technician may also be responsible for observing chimpanzee’s symptoms; dispensing medication; assisting with exams, treatment, sample collection, maintaining medical records, sedations, recoveries, surgery, and evaluation and preparation of data.  Additional duties include but are not limited to preparing tissue samples, training animal care staff and other duties as requested.

Education & Experience

Assistant Veterinary Technician requires a high school diploma or equivalent. A veterinary technical degree is preferred. Applicants must have an aptitude for the care and wellbeing of animals. Minimally, the candidate should have one year prior veterinary technician experience, while two or more years is preferred.  A combination of related education and experience may be considered.
