Three mornings ago, hell descended on our coastal home in Cameroon when what appears to have been a horrifically cold and calculated robbery turned into a brutal and senseless murder.

There is no way that words can serve to express the devastation that those closest to Ymke feel at this time. For now it is only possible to live minute by minute, life is meaningless and the only concern is to get poor Ymke home. I wish to thank everyone who is helping with this process.

Ymke had to face many challenges in her short life, but remained steadfastly passionate about the conservation and well-being of wildlife. I will treasure our nine years together forever and will never come to terms with what has happened. I did not deserve someone as loving and compassionate as Ymke in my life. We are all poorer for her loss in so many ways.

I wish to thank you all for forwarding your messages of support at this truly awful time. Please spare a minute to think of Ymke’s parents and family who I know are going through their own hell.

Ymke, my love, we are with you.
