UK Education and Outreach
Ape Alliance visits festivals, schools and organises events with our team of dedicated volunteers throughout the UK using the power of the Great Apes Film Initiative Pedal Power Cinema to raise awareness of the threats facing apes in the wild and the conservation measures in place giving people practical ways to make a difference.

DCR Parks Emergency Relief
Spearheaded by Jo Thomson,between 2000 and 2003 Ape Alliance members and other allies pooled more than $100,000 for support to beleaguered park guards during DRC civil war.Read more
Ngamba Island and the Chimpanzee Sanctuary and Wildlife Conservation Trust
Located on Lake Victoria in Uganda, Ngamba Island provides a long-term forest sanctuary to 44 orphan chimpanzees. Rescued from the horrific bushmeat and pet trades, many of these chimpanzees will have seen their parents and family killed in front of them, and most arrived on the island traumatised and malnourished. Lum Nam Pai Gibbon Release Project
Located in Maehongson Province in the North East corner of Thailand, the Lum Nam Pai Wildlife Sanctuary has been identified by the Wildlife Friends of Thailand (WFFT) as the ideal release site for many of the rescued gibbons. These individuals have been rescued from the pet trade, and have already undergone quarantine, rehabilitation and pre-release training. Read more
Great Apes Film Initiative
With only 700 individuals remaining in the highlands at the borders of Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, the world's mountain gorillas could become extinct within a matter of years. Raising awareness of the need to protect these unique animals and their habitat within the local communities is vital to the success of conservation efforts. Read more
Kalaweit Gibbon Project Indonesia
In Indonesia, habitat loss is a major issue for many species, particularly with forest clearance to make way for palm oil plantations. For gibbons, this problem is compounded by a thriving pet trade. Entire gibbon families are slaughtered to capture one baby for this trade, and when these individuals reach sexual maturity – at around seven years – they become too aggressive to keep and many are killed. Bonobo: Lukuru Wildlife Research Project
The Lukuru Project lies at the very heart of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It covers an area of approximately 17 percent of the global range of the bonobo, and 20 percent of the Salonga National Park, a World Heritage Site in Danger. The Lukuru Project focus includes two of the nine bonobo priority populations.Read more
The Tchimpounga Chimpanzee Rehabilitation Centre (TCRC)
The TCRC was established in 1992, just outside the Republic of Congo's second city, Pointe Noire, through a cooperative agreement between the Jane Goodall Institute and the Government of Congo's Ministère de l'Economie Forestière. The largest chimpanzee sanctuary in Africa, its primary objective is to shelter and rehabilitate orphan chimpanzees.Read more
Belantikan Forest project – Orangutan Foundation
The forests of the Belantikan Hulu region in Indonesian Borneo contain the largest single population of wild orangutans outside of a protected area and are internationally recognised as critical orangutan habitat. They are home to an estimated 6,000 orangutans in one contiguous habitat block of lowland tropical forest covering some 580,000 ha. Read more
Leuser Ecosystem Forest Restoration Project
The Leuser forests are the last stronghold of the Sumatran orangutan, but this critical ecosystem has been damaged by illegal deforestation. Our team has planted over 570,000 seedlings in degraded forest areas across northern Sumatra in collaboration with local communities. We work to restore rainforest both inside the Gunung Leuser National Park and in the buffer zone.Read more
