Four gorillas die in Volcanoes National Park – WWF


Nairobi, Kenya – WWF is saddened by the death of four mountain gorillas in Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park. The mother and three infant gorillas were part of an estimated 380 members of the highly endangered Virunga mountain gorilla population.

Wild gorillas are affected by ecotourism

A new review of the effects of ecotourism on western lowland gorillas
has shown that the presence of tourists and research teams disturbs
the animals and recommends the increase of the minimum observation
distance to 10 metres.

Stressed gorillas spend less time feeding when humans are too close
for comfort

The last stand of the Apes: On the brink of Extinction, Humans Vs Apes.. on the front lines of the biggest battle on our planet


If someone were to destroy your grandmother's house in order to sell the materials for a profit would you be OK with it?  Unfortunately our race, the  human race, is doing that exact thing to our closest living relatives in Africa.  Habitat exploitation, poaching for bush-meat  as well as the introduction of new diseases is destroying the last hold out populations of chimpanzees and gorillas.  At the current rate, soon there will no longer be any wild chimpanzees or gorillas and according to experts minimum of  $30 million dollars is needed if we plan on conserving these species on our planet.

The Need for the Review of the UNFCCC’s Forest-Related Terms, Definitions and Classifications


Civil Society Submission to the People's World Conference on Climate Change and Mother Earth's Rights

On around 16 February 2010, it was reported in the international media that the Indonesian Forestry Ministry is:

"...drafting a decree to include oil palm plantations in the forest sector to comply with international standards in mitigating climate change.............. By definition, oil palm plantations will be defined as forest......... to anticipate the implementation of the REDD scheme".

In response to the reaction of civil society to this proposal, on 14 April 2010, the Indonesian Government announced that this controversial initiative will not be pursued.
