Zoo welcomes birth of rare gibbon

A baby white-cheeked gibbon named Nakai is being hand reared at Perth Zoo after his mother struggled to care for him after his birth.

Perth Zoo primate keeper Holly Thompson said the 8-week-old gibbon required around the clock care.

"He's on nine feeds a day of a milk formula," she said.

A pair of twin mountain gorillas have been born in Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park, it was reported by International Gorilla Conservation Programme (IGCP), a coalition of WWF, African Wildlife Foundation and Fauna & Flora International.

Last month's birth marks only the seventh recorded case of twin mountain gorillas among Rwanda's habituated population since observations began 40 years ago. A previous set of rare twins was born in the park in February.

Protein-Rich Diet Helps Gorillas Keep Lean

By SINDYA N. BHANOO

Gorillas don't seem to be facing the obesity epidemic that humans in modern society are.

That's because our primate brethren follow a lean diet with protein concentrations similar to the American Heart Association's recommendations for humans, says Jessica Rothman, an anthropologist at Hunter College of the City University of New York.

Dr. Rothman and her colleagues studied mountain gorillas in Uganda and found that they eat a protein-rich diet, supplemented with fruits. Protein makes up about 17 percent of their total energy intake, close to the 15 percent protein intake the heart association recommends for people.
