The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the nation’s largest animal advocacy organization, is seeking a Vice President for its Wildlife Department.  The Wildlife Department promotes the protection and humane treatment of all wildlife, captive and free, as well as the preservation and maintenance of quality wildlife habitat, and seeks to foster respect and appreciation for wild animals and nature.   Members of the section provide scientific policy advice and support on a range of issues, promoting humane wildlife management practices and those that preserve biological diversity and functional ecosystems on public lands.  The section produces analyses of wildlife and environmental management plans at both the state and federal levels, on predator and other wildlife damage control initiatives; focuses on the treatment of wild animals in captive settings, including zoos and aquaria, auctions, the exotic meat industry, canned hunts, and other situations; and promotes the implementation of wildlife contraception techniques for the management of multiple species.  The successful candidate will lead a team of over 30 wildlife professionals in pursuit of current priorities including banning fox penning and canned hunts, restricting the trade in fur and exotics, protecting marine mammals, wild horses and mega fauna, creating effective and economical community programs for  living in harmony with wildlife, and providing direct response for man-made or natural disasters.  In addition, the candidate will lead the organization’s efforts to develop, refine and successfully implement programs and campaigns to reduce and/or eliminate cruelty to wildlife and to protect our wild places.  The ideal candidate will also be responsible for department budgeting and developing an annual comprehensive fundraising plan for the department and for working across the organization and with external agencies and organizations to develop innovative partnerships for change.  Advanced degree (Master’s, Ph.D.) in wildlife biology, biology or related science or equivalent knowledge/experience in animal policy issues preferred.  Seven years of progressive job-related experience, which has included responsibilities for staff management, program development, fundraising, and complex strategic development, preferably in a similar work environment and field of work.  Thorough knowledge of and commitment to animal protection strongly preferred.  Must be willing to travel.
