Gorillas are the largest of the great apes and are found in only nine African countries. Traditionally they have been regarded as one species with three sub species, but some scientists have recently proposed that the differences between the eastern and western populations are sufficient to regard them as separate species, each with sub-species.

The Cross River Gorillas (Gorilla gorilla diehli) at Mawambi Hills, South-West Cameroon: Habitat Suitabililty and Vulnerability to Antrhropogenic Disturbance

Only about 300 individuals of the Cross River gorilla survive today. The subspecies is endemic to approximately 12–14 sites.
