The Guardian Post | November 2011
A dealer in protected wildlife species has been arrested in Lomie, in the Upper Nyong division of the East region. The man was arrested in possession of a huge stock of gorilla meat contained in a fridge in his home. Also found in the fridge were parts of De Brazza monkey and agile mangabey, a rare monkey species which belongs to class A and totally protected according to the 1994 wildlife law. Within 24 hours of the arrest the trafficker, three others were arrested in the same town — Lomie, with numerous parts of protected wildlife species.

Baby gorilla will join other orphans
August 2011. An infant mountain gorilla has been confiscated from poachers by Rwandan police in the town of Gisenyi on the border of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Police arrested the Congolese poachers holding the infant as well as two Rwandans who were helping the poachers. The gorilla had been captured near the Bukima area of Virunga National Park, according to the poachers, indicating that it belongs to a critically endangered population. The poachers claimed they kept the gorilla for about six days, feeding him bananas and sugar cane until attempting to smuggle him to Rwanda.

Zirikana is a 4-Year old infant male in Umubano group in Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park. Zirikana was reported to be caught in rope snare on his left leg.
Trackers were able to cut rope from tree where it was tied, allowing the infant to move freely, but the snare remained tight around his ankle.
Elisabeth, Rwanda Development Board (RBD) veterinary technician, went to check the infant that afternoon, and confirmed the presence of the rope snare on Zirikana's leg. As always, Gorilla Doctors consulted with the RDB's head veterinarian Tony Mudakwika, and the Chief Park Warden Prosper Uwingeli, along with Elisabeth and trackers. This resulted in the decision to attempt an intervention to remove the snare the following morning.

Three men have been arrested for killing an endangered mountain gorilla who was found dead last week in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.
The male gorilla, named Mizano, was discovered by Ugandan Wildlife Authority (UWA) trackers on June 17 in the Bujengwe area of the Park. Officials say that Mizano was speared through the shoulders and neck by poachers who had encountered the gorilla in the park whilst looking for antelope.

A pair of twin mountain gorillas have been born in Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park, it was reported by International Gorilla Conservation Programme (IGCP), a coalition of WWF, African Wildlife Foundation and Fauna & Flora International.
Last month's birth marks only the seventh recorded case of twin mountain gorillas among Rwanda's habituated population since observations began 40 years ago. A previous set of rare twins was born in the park in February.
