Species - Gibbon

Gibbon Distribution Map

Gibbons are small, slender, long-armed, tree-dwelling apes. These very acrobatic primates live in southeast Asia. Gibbons are arboreal; they spend most of their lives in trees. Because they are so agile while moving in the trees, almost no predators can catch them. There are nine species of gibbons, including the siamang, which is the largest and darkest gibbon. Because of the rapid deforestation of their habitats, some gibbon species are critically endangered.

The gibbon's habitat area is shown in white on this map of South East Asia. Learn more about the gibbon's habitat, South East Asia, by buying Earth's Green Heart - Asia.

Tropical rainforests are home to more than half the world’s species and play a crucial role in maintaining the health of our planet. Steve Taylor has travelled across Africa, Amazonia and Borneo to explore first-hand the complex issues of deforestation. Gorillas in Africa, river dolphins in Peru, orangutans in Borneo all feature, along with forest-dwelling people – traditional custodians of the forest. Money raised through the sale of Earth's Green Heart DVDs supports Ape Alliance & its members' conservation efforts.

A joint statement has been issued by the BUAV (British Union for the Abolition of Vivisection) and FRAME (Fund for the Replacement of Animals in Medical Experiments) calling on the Government to make a ban on experiments on Great Apes permanent and legally binding in the UK.

New rules being introduced in Europe through EU Directive 2010/63 ban the use of Great Apes in laboratories, but include a provision that individual member states can seek to use them if there is an unexpected outbreak of a life threatening human disease in the future.

Largest Population of Critically Endangered Gibbon Discovered in Vietnam

Pu Mat National Park, Vietnam - Conservation International (CI) has discovered the largest known remaining population of the critically endangered northern white-cheeked crested gibbon (Nomascus leucogenys) in Vietnam. Through auditory surveying, a technique which uses the species loud morning calls for identification, CI has confirmed a substantial population of 130 groups (455 animals), making this the highest priority for conservation action for the species globally.

A baby white-cheeked gibbon named Nakai is being hand reared at Perth Zoo after his mother struggled to care for him after his birth.
