So foram reconhecidos como uma especie distinta em 1929, estes sao tal como os chimpanzes, os nossos mais proximos relativos. Infelizmente a sua distribuicao na selva esta limitada a guerrana Republica Democratica do Congo, a sul do rio Congo. Pequenas noticias emergiram nos ultimos meses, mas as mais recentes indicacoes sao que estes estao a ser mortos para serem transformados em comida e as pequenas crias orfas vendidas para o mercado de animais de estimacao.
