Rio+20 Earth Summit
In 2012, world leaders will again turn their attention to the environment at the Rio+20 Earth Summit in June. This presents a good opportunity to take stock of progress (or lack of it) since the first Earth Summit 20 years ago. At that first Rio summit, the UN created three new conventions to tackle climate change, biodiversity loss and desertification (useful intro and links here http://www.cbd.int/rio/). Unfortunately, despite some successes and the determined efforts of many people, all three problems are getting worse rather than better.
Previous Years
2011 - UN International Year of Forests2010 - UN International Year of Biodiversity
2009 - Year of the Gorilla
As in previous years (see aside) the Ape Alliance will be seeking ways to influence environmental policies to improve the survival chances of apes – indeed all non-human primates and other keystone species in tropical forests. We recognise that the fate of our closest relatives is inextricably tied to our own fate, and that intact tropical forest ecosystems are essential for climate stability and the maintenance of global weather patterns that water crops and fill aquifers all over the world.
The Ape Alliance exists to:
- Provide a forum for discussion of issues relating to apes.
- Develop position papers on key issues.
- Lobby collectively for enactment and/or enforcement of legislation to improve the welfare and/or conservation of apes.
- Campaign for greater public awareness of ape issues and increase respect for apes.
- Facilitate information exchange between member groups and, where appropriate, coordinate activities to maximise their beneficial effect.
