International Year of Forests
2011 has been designated the International Year of Forests by the United Nations. Forests play a critical role in maintaining climate stability and providing other benefits. Apes are keystone species in African and SE Asian forests - it is important to remember that forests need primates as much as primates need forests.
The Ape Alliance is organising events about forests throughout the year – if you’d like to attend or help organise one, please get in touch. Note: 2011 is also the Year of the Bat, designated by the Convention on Migratory Species – bats also play an important role in forest ecology, some pollinating trees, some dispersing seeds and some controlling insect numbers.
Previously, 2010 was the UN International Year of Biodiversity and 2009 was the Year of the Gorilla. The Ape Alliance also supported the UN Year of the Gorilla campaign 2009. Not only was Ape Alliance chairman Ian Redmond OBE the Ambassador for the UN YoG but also, many of our member organisations organised special events during the year. You can still read about the issues and projects supported at www.YoG2009.org and view the YoG Blog. Read the YoG Epilogue to see how the ideas behind YoG integrate with 2010 the UN International Year of Biodiversity and indeed the 2011 Year of Forests.
The Ape Alliance exists to:
- Provide a forum for discussion of issues relating to apes.
- Develop position papers on key issues.
- Lobby collectively for enactment and/or enforcement of legislation to improve the welfare and/or conservation of apes.
- Campaign for greater public awareness of ape issues and increase respect for apes.
- Facilitate information exchange between member groups and, where appropriate, coordinate activities to maximise their beneficial effect.
